2003 Nobel Prize in Literature Awarded

The Swedish Academy in Stockholm announced in October that J. M. Coetzee is the 2003 recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Mr. Coetzee was born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1940. After receiving two B.A.’s with honors in English and Mathematics from the University of Cape Town, he earned a Ph.D. in English from the University of Texas at Austin. He has taught at American and South African universities, and currently holds appointments at the University of Adelaide, and the University of Chicago. He is the first writer to have twice been awarded the distinguished Booker Prize for his novels The Life and Times of Michael K (1983), and Disgrace (1999). His other notable works include Waiting for the Barbarians (1982), The Master of Petersburg (1994), and his latest, Elizabeth Costello (2003), as well as several works of criticism. He is also the recipient of numerous international literary awards, including the Jerusalem Prize, the Prix Étranger Fémina, and the Irish Times International Fiction Award.
