Pakistani Teachers Visit PSU – Summer 2006

On June 26 the campus and Library will welcome 20 new teachers and school administrators in the 2006 Pakistani Teachers Summer Institute. The participants represent various administrative levels in the Pakistani educational system, and focus their time here on math and science education, and leadership training to be master trainers upon their return to Pakistan. The project is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Lamson Library extends a warm welcome to the group.

    Take a look at this English language Pakistani newspaper to see what’s happening now in Pakistan. The Nation is said to be “internationally the most quoted Pakistani newspaper”. With five editions published daily from three stations, it is the market leader in the Punjab and Islamabad areas, and has established a strong presence in Karachi since its inception there in 2000.”

    Also, check out a selection of books on Pakistan on display in front of the Reference Area. For more information and materials, search the library’s online catalog by subject for ” Pakistan.” You will find many items listed, broken down into a variety of subject divisions and sub-divisions. Note: Items in Lamson Library may be limited to specific types of material, such as “children’s literature”. Ask at the Reference Desk for assistance.

    Lamson Learning Commons Update

    In September of 2006, what is currently the library circulation desk will be expanded to a full-service Information Desk, core to what will be the new Lamson Learning Commons.

    The Library and Information Technology Services (ITS) are teaming up to integrate their support services. The ITS Help Desk, currently located in Hyde Hall, will move its operation to the Learning Commons. When you walk into the Library this fall, you will find an array of new services that include

    • General Campus and Library information
    • Computer support (walk-up, online and telephone)
    • Reference services and research assistance
    • Book checkout and reserves
    • Multimedia equipment checkout
    • Laptop checkout
    • Access to high-end computer workstations for multimedia presentation development

    The Lamson Learning Commons Information Desk will be open 7 days a week. It will be staffed by students and professionals cross-trained to support these services.

    Additional academic support service—Plymouth Academic Support Services (PASS) and the Writing & Reading Center (WRC)—will be co-located on the lower level.

    Rounding out the new services offered in the Lamson Learning Commons will be an “internet cafe.” Located on the lower level on the Highland Street side will be a food and beverage service. Need a jump to maintain your studious edge? Grab a cup of coffee! Hungry? Grab a bagel or other snack.

    Café Naming Contest: The Learning Commons Project Team is hosting a café naming contest. Submit an entry—give us your best and creative ideas. Entries will be reviewed by the Lamson Learning Commons Project Team. The winner will receive an iPod Shuffle. Runners up will get gift certificates to the new café.

    Lamson Learning Commons Construction

    Construction on the Lamson Learning Commons has begun. Once the dust has cleared, your library will have been renovated into a one-stop-shop for all your technology, research, and academic support needs. All regular services will continue during the construction, though some of them from temporary locations.

    • Book and reserve material check out/check in
      A temporary information desk has been setup near the main entrance.
    • Computer help
      Also available at the information desk near the main entrance, online, and on the phone at 535-2929
    • Reference and research help
      Reference librarians await your questions at the reference desk.
    • Computer access
      Computers in and near the reference area will be available throughout the construction; other clusters will be closed.
    • Lower level books and materials
      The lower level will be closed for major renovations and construction of the new coffee shop, but the materials there are available by request at the information desk.
