Each speaker thanked members of the Project Team, as well as the staff members of the Library and Information Technology Departments for their hard work in integrating services. Recognition was also given to former President Donald Wharton and former VPAA Virginia Barry for their support of the project from its very inception.

After the ribbon cutting ceremony at the newly constructed Information Desk, attendees were invited to celebrate the occasion in the new Commons Cafe, complete with their signature coffee and various refreshments.

Did you know that in 2005, there were 405 attempts to remove books from the shelves of U.S. public and school libraries? That’s more than a book a day! Banned Books Week in 2006 marks the 25th anniversary of its celebration of the freedom to read.

Robie Harris’ teen book It’s Perfectly Normal topped the list of most challenged books in 2005. Banned Books Week is sponsored, in part, by the American Library Association Freedom to Read Foundation and the National Coalition Against Censorship.

Vote for your favorite challenged book!

A selection of banned books will be featured at Lamson Library.

The Role of Media in a Democracy

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

The post 9/11 era has ushered in many questions about war and peace in the world. Yet, says Dr. Calvin Exoo, “…at this crucial moment in American history, the media has failed in its capacity as the watchdog of the people.” Why has the media failed in its democratic function and what can be done about it?

Dr. Exoo was the first speaker in Plymouth State Univeristy’s Sidore Lecture Series on September 19, 2006. Check out additional resources (and other viewpoints!) on democracy and the media from the Lamson Library catalog.

Constitution Day 2006

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

United States Constitution

Lamson Library celebrates Constitution Day, September 17th 2006. Standing as the oldest written constitution still in effect, its 7000 words also make in one of the shortest. The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History explains:

The basic document by which the United States is governed, the Constitution was drafted at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787 and ratified the following year. The Constitution divides governmental powers between the national and state governments in a system known as federalism. It also divides the national government into three independent branches-executive, legislative, and judicial-which can serve as checks and balances upon one another.

Lamson Library joins the university’s celebration with a special display of materials on the US Constitution and its history.
