Newbery award winning book banned from libraries

Librarian/author Susan Patron discovered the downside of winning the highest award in children’s literature.

In her 2007 Newbery Award winning book, The Higher Power of Lucky, the word “scrotum” appears on the first page. The books heroine, Lucky Trimble, hears the word through a wall from another character who is describing where his dog was bitten by a rattlesnake.

Fearing controversy, libraries in several areas of the country have banned the book entirely from their collections.

Landscape photography at the Commons Cafe

The Library and Lamson Learning Commons is pleased to display the landscape photography of PSU student Andrew P. Cary in the Commons Cafe.

Cary is the first student at Plymouth to create a complete digital portfolio in photography. He writes that “looking through the lens allows me to create interesting compositions and to explore and capture everyday landscape scenes into pictures that communicate on another level.”

Harlem Renaissance display at Lamson

In observation of Black History Month, Lamson Library is celebrating the Harlem Renaissance with a selection of library resources on the rich literary and cultural heritage of this period.

Kindergarteners visit Lamson Library

Monday, February 12th, 2007

Kindergarteners from the PSU Child Development and Family Center visited the library on Thursday February 8th. The class had been exploring fairy tales and were eager to find their favorites such as Beauty and the Beast, The Three Little Pigs, and Jack and the Beanstalk.

Outreach Librarian, Anne Kulig, read a new twist on one old favorite entitled KATE and the Beanstalk by Mary Pope Osborn (author of the the popular Magic Tree House series) and then the youngsters visited the Children’s Literature collection to find their OWN magic.

The Childcare Center protocol does not permit us to show pictures of the children, but a good time was had by all. Our thanks go to Meredith Leighton and Karen McDonough, Kindergarten Teachers, for arranging the visit.

PSU’s Snowy Past

The Michael J. Spinelli, Jr. Center for University Archives and Special Collections presents an exhibit of winter activities at Plymouth. Most photographs and written material comes from the first half of the 20th century, including Plymouth Normal School and Plymouth Teachers College. The photographs depict typical winter activities, skiing, snowshoeing, and Winter Carnival. The exhibit is located on the upper level of Lamson Library, near the entrance to the Archives Room. These photographs of the 1959 Winter Carnival were donated by alum Marilyn Currie Mons, class of 1961.

Environmental Art Display in Commons Cafe

“This environmental artwork filled up all of Riverfront Park in Plymouth. As is often the case with earthworks, this one didn’t last very long. It took two hours for 12 people (with 12 rakes!) to construct theis piece, but it only took the rain until the next day to wash it all away. The interaction between the elements and the work is part of what makes this kind of art so dynamic.”

The artists participating in the project were: Matthew Blanchette, Jeffrey Chase, Chantal Cote, Katie Dexter, Sarah Flavin, Jacob Lemay, Ashley Merrill, Matthew Rich, Kearsley Rooke and Catherine Wilson.
