The Library and Lamson Learning Commons is pleased to announce the arrival of new student artwork in The Commons Cafe .

Alicia Roche wrote of her above work, “…..These particular pieces represent a stressful few weeks. I made them while really contemplating the things I wish I could be doing and the things I am forced to do. This confict resulted in a few pieces that seem anxious, edgy and caught between euphoria and agony.”

Kyle Desmarais

The paintings of Kyle Desmarais are displayed on the public side of the cafe. He wrote, “When I look back at my life and the path I have traveled artistically, it resembles a maze consisting of styles and processes leading to the work you see in front of you today. Through this journey of learning experiences, I have been able to gather and combine many qualities and techniques resulting in this gallery display.”

Lamson Library will celebrate the Investiture of President Sara Jayne Steen with a Community Open House on Saturday April 14th from 10 am to Noon.

Tour the newly renovated Library and Lamson Learning Commons, bring the children for storytelling with President Steen in the Tower Room, and visit the Michael J. Spinelli Center for University Archives and Special Collections. Plymouth and Holderness Residents may apply for their free library cards at the Information Desk.

The Commons Cafe will be opened from 9 am to 1 pm serving Starbucks coffee, and other complimentary refreshments will be served in select locations.

All are welcome!

The Library and Lamson Learning Commons is pleased to display the landscape photography of PSU student Andrew P. Cary in the Commons Cafe.

Cary is the first student at Plymouth to create a complete digital portfolio in photography. He writes that “looking through the lens allows me to create interesting compositions and to explore and capture everyday landscape scenes into pictures that communicate on another level.”

    “This environmental artwork filled up all of Riverfront Park in Plymouth. As is often the case with earthworks, this one didn’t last very long. It took two hours for 12 people (with 12 rakes!) to construct theis piece, but it only took the rain until the next day to wash it all away. The interaction between the elements and the work is part of what makes this kind of art so dynamic.”

The artists participating in the project were: Matthew Blanchette, Jeffrey Chase, Chantal Cote, Katie Dexter, Sarah Flavin, Jacob Lemay, Ashley Merrill, Matthew Rich, Kearsley Rooke and Catherine Wilson.

The Library and Lamson Learning Commons has begun to offer displays of student art work. The first exhibit, located on both sides of The Commons Cafe, features the work of Rebecca McCormack ‘07, a senior Art major.

Rebecca describes her artwork entitled “162″ below.

There are a million ways to paint. Some paintings are more about what you are painting than how you are painting it. However, this group of 162 paintings is almost completely about process. During the spring semester of 2006, I chose to set a few rules for my process. I decided that each painting would be six inches square, on paper with acrylic paint. These choices allowed me to bring my work with me everywhere because it was small and acrylic paint dries fast.

After that, there were a million more choices to make. I painted almost everyday. Usually I would paint more than one square at a time. Some would start as just one color, then I would go back to them later—others stayed that way. I used string, leaves, plastic canvas and many other materials to change the marks I could make. Some pieces started out as six-inch squares. Others were cut down from larger pieces into my chosen size. In order to keep moving forward and make my work interesting, I needed to find new ways of manipulating the paint on the paper.

As I worked, people would look through the ones I had decided were finished. My favorite discovery was that everyone had a favorite. People sometimes liked the same one but for completely different reasons. There were ones that I didn’t care for, but I left them the way they were because someone really loved it. Even after 162 pieces, I still don’t know. . . . How much can be done using only paint on a six-inch square?

PSU President Sara Jayne Steen, Library Director David Berona, and Chief Information Officer Dwight Fischer, were the featured speakers at the grand opening celebration of the Lamson Learning Commons on Friday September 29.

Each speaker thanked members of the Project Team, as well as the staff members of the Library and Information Technology Departments for their hard work in integrating services. Recognition was also given to former President Donald Wharton and former VPAA Virginia Barry for their support of the project from its very inception.

After the ribbon cutting ceremony at the newly constructed Information Desk, attendees were invited to celebrate the occasion in the new Commons Cafe, complete with their signature coffee and various refreshments.

The Plymouth State community is invited to the grand opening of the Lamson Learning Commons Friday, September 29th, from 10-11:30 a.m.

This ceremony will mark the end of a 16 month project designed to integrate library and technology support services, surrounding them with academic support programs in PASS and the Writing & Reading Center, and a new Commons Cafe, serving up coffee and snacks to the south side of campus.

Coffee and refreshments will be served.
